Bazaar Story: Angel Care Pregnancy Center

Angel Care is a pregnancy center in the midst of a maternal healthcare desert. Liberia is ranked 10th for maternal mortality rates in the world. Prenatal care is hard to come by in Liberia, and even more so for those living in poverty.

Compounding the difficulty for women in Liberia is the pervasiveness of domestic violence. Around 49 percent of Liberian women experience domestic violence in their home—that is almost half of all women in the country. Widespread domestic violence results in unhealthy and destructive habits of interaction within families.

Angel Care steps into this brokenness through offering two-week parenting classes. During the parenting class, counselors work with women to process the trauma from abuse and help mothers learn healthy ways to interact with their kids—instead of following the unhealthy ones modeled in many Liberian homes.

Women like Krubo hear about God’s plan for healthy relationships and are given hope in the steadfastness and love of Christ.

Krubo is a single mom of five children. She had experienced more disappointment and hardships than she could count. Bitterness and anger consumed her heart. Rude words escaped her mouth and reached the ears of her children. But when Krubo started attending Angel Care programs, her disposition shifted. She started to understand the trauma she and her children experienced, began to heal from the abuse, and attends church as she learns more about God.
