Every Gift Has a Story: Arise and Shine (Kenya)
Arise and Shine is a ministry in Kericho, Kenya, dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities and their families. Founded by a Christian mother with experience with developmental challenges in her own family, this ministry is driven by a deep compassion to see every person valued, cared for, and helped to reach their God-given potential.
At the heart of Arise and Shine’s work is a desire to share the love and hope of Jesus Christ. Through its various outreach initiatives, Arise and Shine is making a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by disabilities like cerebral palsy and autism. From organizing community awareness events to providing essential therapies and assistive devices, this ministry breaks down barriers and fosters a loving Christ-centered community.
Arise and Shine is also dedicated to nurturing the spiritual well-being of the individuals and families it serves. Through Bible-based teachings on disability, the organization is countering harmful cultural stigmas and equipping local churches to be more welcoming and supportive. Its caregiver support groups and counseling services provide a vital lifeline of emotional and spiritual encouragement.
Earlier this year, Arise and Shine acquired a sensory & physical therapy room and equipment to enhance therapy services for children with disabilities. The launch celebration included over 100 participants, including caregivers, persons with disabilities, physiotherapists, nutritionists, government officials, and community members. It brought visibility to Arise and Shine’s ministry and provided an opportunity to raise public awareness about the new facility and the broader needs of the disability community.
Over the summer, Arise and Shine conducted several training sessions for caregivers. One provided caregivers with agricultural and life skills to help them generate a sustainable income, reduce financial dependency, and enhance their capacity to provide for their families. Another training focused directly on caregivers’ mental health. Sessions covered caregiver burnout, coping strategies for stress and emotional fatigue, the importance of building peer support networks among caregivers, and practical skills for self-care and positive parenting of children with disabilities. After these trainings, caregivers shared that they had felt seen, heard, and supported.
