Ministry Update: Sugandh (India)

Established in Delhi in 1997, Sugandh is on a mission to bring light to the lives of the poor and marginalized in India’s urban slums by demonstrating the hope and dignity found in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Its holistic mission integrates education, vocational training, women’s empowerment, child development, health, advocacy, and gospel outreach to uplift marginalized families, especially women and youth, living in resettled colonies such as Holambi Kalan and Madanpur Khadar.

Earlier this fall, Satish Moses, Oakseed’s Ministry Liaison to India, had the opportunity to visit Sugandh. He shared some thoughts and observations from his visit.

The Holambi Kalan resettlement colony, located in North Delhi, is home to over 10,000 families who were relocated from inner-city slums. Despite government rehabilitation efforts, the area still lacks adequate education facilities, drainage, and healthcare. Most residents are day laborers or domestic workers, and many young people are school dropouts with little access to vocational or digital training.

Amid this poverty, Sugandh’s Holambi Center stands as a light. The center is located in a two-story building owned by Sugandh, which has become a hub for computer classes, sewing and tailoring courses, tutoring, counseling, advocacy sessions, and Bible studies.

The center has undergone visible improvements since the last visit three years ago, new flooring, fresh paint, ceiling fans, furniture, lighting, kitchen cabinets, and computers. These upgrades have made the facility more conducive to learning and ministry, yet the space remains insufficient for the growing number of participants. The two-story building (45 square yards in each floor) is now fully utilized, with all activities, computer training, sewing, kitchen, counseling, and Bible studies, operating within limited enclosed space.
