Ministry Update: The Way (Brazil)

The Way is a Christ-centered ministry in the favelas (slums) of São Paulo, Brazil, that is profoundly impacting the lives of children and families in poverty, violence, and hopelessness. Its approach is centered on sports, culture, education, sustainability, and faith. Through its programs, The Way introduces children to the love and transformative power of Christ. Its staff and volunteers share the gospel, disciple young believers, and model what it looks like to live as a true follower of Jesus.

In August, The Way was invited to reorganize the community building of Jd. Panorama to facilitate additional courses and activities. This was especially encouraging after the cartel leaders had caused problems for The Way’s presence at Jd. Panorama last year, resulting in The Way being asked to leave. The Way’s main objective for this space is to provide the community with a safe place where people can escape from violence, drugs, and other problems. The Way’s staff at Mandelhina are now experiencing similar struggles with the cartel leaders.

The chaplaincy activities at Panorama have been growing, as more and more people ask for advice and help, indicating their trust in The Way’s staff. This is encouraging and quite intense for leaders. With troubles with cartel leaders and several of the teens getting involved in serious troubles in Mandelhina, The Way has decided to hire a full-time missionary chaplain to serve in Mandelhina like it has in Jd. Panorama.

At Jd. Panorama, The Way has been able to offer 40 hours of activities per week, including Bible studies and kindergarten activities. One answer to prayer and cause for celebration was when one of the kids from Panorama recently graduated, thanks to a scholarship that The Way was able to provide for her.

The kids at Mandelhina were given the opportunity to attend an orchestra concert in downtown Sao Paulo, a special treat for them. Its local church is rebuilding the church center in Mandelhina to create a safe place for the people there.
