Ministry Update: Hogar Emanuel (Dominican Republic)

In the impoverished municipality of Quisqueya, Dominican Republic, Hogar Emanuel stands as a beacon of hope, transforming the lives of children and families through the power of the gospel. Founded in 2000 by a fifth-grade teacher who saw the dire needs of her impoverished students, Hogar Emanuel started with just 55 children in a converted two-room apartment. It serves the most vulnerable members of its community – those with physical, emotional, and intellectual disabilities, many of whom come from non-Christian homes. Through the tireless efforts of the dedicated staff, these children are introduced to the life-changing message of the gospel.

In addition to providing a Christ-centered education, Hogar Emanuel operates a feeding program, ensuring that the children receive at least one nutritious meal per day – often the only meal they will have. The ministry also addresses the children’s physical needs, offering medical care, therapy, and even home repairs for the families it serves.

In the spring, we shared that Hogar Emanuel rejoiced in the Lord’s continued goodness in providing for the school, including more students and the necessary new classrooms, offices, and community spaces additional students require.

The new school year began last week, and even that is additional testimony to God’s goodness and provision for Emanuel House! The National Office for the Evaluation and Vulnerability of Infrastructure and Buildings conducted a review of Emanuel House’s facilities and concluded that, because it is located in a seismic zone, it would need to complete some reinforcements to the buildings before the new school year could begin. This would have meant pushing back the start of school by a significant amount of time.

The Lord answered prayers and gave Emanuel House favor with the governmental officials. It has been allowed to open for the new school year while renovations are taking place, so the students will not fall behind in their classes. In the meantime, Emanuel House has been able to shuffle classes around to use approved classroom spaces until these renovations take place. Emanuel House sings the Lord’s praise and rejoices in His goodness!
