Ministry Update: Arise and Shine (Kenya)
Arise and Shine is a ministry in Kericho, Kenya, dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities and their families. Founded by a Christian mother with experience with developmental challenges in her own family, this ministry is driven by a deep compassion to see every person valued, cared for, and assisted to reach their God-given potential.
At the heart of Arise and Shine’s work is a desire to share the love and hope of Jesus Christ. Through its various outreach initiatives, Arise and Shine is making a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by disabilities like cerebral palsy and autism.
Arise and Shine is dedicated to nurturing the spiritual well-being of the individuals and families it serves. Through Bible-based teachings on disability, the organization is countering harmful cultural stigmas and equipping local churches to be more welcoming and supportive. Its caregiver support groups and counseling services provide a vital lifeline of emotional and spiritual encouragement.
This summer, Arise and Shine has had the opportunity to conduct several training sessions for caregivers. In partnership with the Departments of Social Services and Senior Citizens Affairs, Arise and Shine met with ten women who are caregivers of children with disabilities. The goal was to provide them with agricultural and life skills to help them generate a sustainable income, reduce financial dependency, and enhance their capacity to provide for their families.
Another training directly focused on caregivers’ mental health. This event attracted a wide range of participants, including caregivers of children with developmental disabilities, county government representatives, and partners and stakeholders in disability advocacy and health. The first session of the training was led by Pastor Paul Keno and included prayers, a hymn, and a short sermon. Sessions covered caregiver burnout, coping strategies for stress and emotional fatigue, the importance of building peer support networks among caregivers, and practical skills for self-care and positive parenting of children with disabilities. Participants heard speeches from a caregiver representative who shared personal experiences, a Ministry of Health representative, and key partners who reaffirmed their commitment to caregiver support.
