Ministry Update: The Way (Brazil)

The Way is a Christ-centered ministry in the favelas (slums) of São Paulo, Brazil, that is profoundly impacting the lives of children and families in poverty, violence, and hopelessness. Its approach is centered on sports, culture, education, sustainability, and faith. Through its programs, The Way introduces children to the love and transformative power of Christ. Its staff and volunteers share the gospel, disciple young believers, and model what it looks like to live as a true follower of Jesus.

July was a busy month at The Way. It is winter break in Brazil, so The Way doubled its activities at the shelters to give the kids safe spaces to gather instead of hanging out in the streets. In partnership with a local church, The Way hosted a special Bible school day, drawing 40 children from Mandelinha and 30 from the church. Eight of Panorama’s kids had the opportunity to attend a Bible mentorship program with YWAM a local church. The Way’s leadership team also had the opportunity to participate in a Christian education and leadership workshop.

The Lord answered prayers when a young man named João, whom The Way had “lost” to crime, returned to say that he had left that life and asked for help. With The Way’s help, he is going back to school and starting a part time job to help his mother support the family.

After a fire destroyed a section of JD Panorama, The Way has been helping support families as they rebuild. The Ways’ director shared a poem about the fire and recovery efforts written by one of the families.

Families who cried together, fought together… and now they win together.
