Meet Israel Shalom
Israel Shalom ministers to at-risk children and adolescents from the Brasilândia favela , an impoverished area on the outskirts of São Paulo, Brazil. This ministry uses musical education with a Christian focus to gain kids’ attention and share the gospel—which can transform their life trajectory.
Israel Shalom teaches youth music appreciation classes and beginner to advanced music lessons (instrumental and vocal). Within the community, they perform concerts and shows to highlight young artists. Adolescents are trained to lead worship at local churches and youth detention centers alongside Israel Shalom’s ministry partner, JEAME. Additionally, Israel Shalom teaches ballet classes. Israel Shalom uses these concerts and recitals as public opportunities to share the gospel and showcase the hope found in those who know Christ.
Many of their volunteers are graduates from the program who have returned to invest in the lives of these youth. As these graduates pour into the ministry, they serve as role models and proof to at-risk kids that Jesus is more satisfying than being on the streets and involved with gangs.
The largest country in South America, Brazil is known for its diverse culture, manifested in its cuisine, dance, and music. Brazil has a rich musical heritage, combining Western, African, and native musical influences. While gangs try to attract poor children with promises of protection, community, and income, Israel Shalom holds out the gospel and creates a safe community for young people to learn and use their gifts to glorify the Lord and bless their community.
Oakseed offers several ways to support Israel Shalom in its mission to bring the gospel to its community, including prayer resources and financial support. Please visit our prayer or bazaar catalog pages for more information.
