Ministry Update: Morning Light (Ethiopia)
Morning Light shares the gospel and meets the tangible needs of impoverished women and children by providing child education, helping empower women, and bringing health services to the needy. Over 200 widows, single mothers, and orphans in the slums outside of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, benefit from their tutoring classes for impoverished children and women’s self-help groups. Along with these activities, the beneficiaries receive need-based support as short-term or one-time gifts.
Dr. Rick Horne, Oakseed Ministry Liaison to Africa and the DR, visited Morning Light in February. He shared a particular challenge currently affecting Morning Light’s ministries.
A significant challenge has arisen due to an infrastructure and building program, which has displaced many of the city’s poorer residents. Morning Light’s office is in a central region of the city, near the schools and neighborhoods from which its beneficiaries come. However, most of them are now scattered in several areas farther away and in different directions from its office, requiring a creative reworking of how it conducts its ministries. While Morning Light still serves about 150 students and 70 mothers, transportation and other logistics have made consistency challenging. One adaptation Morning Light has made is to rework several services to accommodate smaller groups of students and adults.
