Ministry Update: Morning Light (Ethiopia)

Morning Light works to bring the light of Christ to communities in darkness and poverty through innovative family development interventions. Its goal is the transformation of the lives of disadvantaged families in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, through education, spiritual formation, and community development.

Morning Light provides educational support for local children, including school supplies, tutoring, and scholarships. It focuses on nurturing children’s relationships with God and strengthening their character and faith through its weekly ethics and life skills classes. Over the spring, staff met with 51 children in these classes twice per week, enjoying multiple opportunities for discussion and discipleship. Staff counselors met individually with several students struggling with behavioral challenges, helping them and their mothers understand the root issues, providing personalized guidance, and setting practical improvement strategies.

As part of its community outreach, Morning Light provided wheat flour and cooking oil to families for Easter holiday support. It also distributed sanitary pads to female students as part of its health education program for students and their mothers.

Morning Light offers income-generating programs for single mothers and vocational training for students. The ministry has seen many women start successful small businesses to help provide for their families. The goal for this year is to come alongside 20 individuals, providing essential support to help them start small businesses. As part of the information-gathering stage for this goal, staff met with the 51 students’ mothers to identify interest in beginning income-generating activities and to support those who already have businesses.

• Pray for the Lord to give Morning Light’s director and staff wisdom as they serve with prayer support, counseling, and teaching, so that each child and adult will receive consistent spiritual care and guidance.
• Pray for the Lord to provide for Morning Light to hire godly, like-minded staff.
• Pray for the Lord to provide for the children and mothers and bring them to faith in Christ.
