Ministry Update: Thandanani House of Refuge (South Africa)

Thandanani House of Refuge provides safe shelter and care for vulnerable children in South Africa. The ministry combines housing, education, healthcare, and discipleship to help children heal from trauma.

In the early 2000s, Kingsway Christian School leadership realized that many children were hindered in their education due to difficult home circumstances. Some had no access to electricity, while others were in situations of abuse. Determined to address this issue, the school opened Thandanani House of Refuge in 2003, providing a safe and nurturing environment for these children to live and thrive.

Today, Thandanani House of Refuge provides a loving home and support for school-age children and teenagers. The ministry is committed to sharing the transformative power of the gospel with the children in its care. Its family continues to grow, welcoming new four- and five-year-old girls, who have been settling in beautifully. By December, Thandanani was serving 20 children (14 girls, with a capacity limit of 8 boys).

Of the six young people who aged out at the end of 2024, two went to a Christian home teaching trades for 18+ youth (two-year program), one went to university in Pretoria with accommodation funding, and two went to live with siblings who had previously left Thandanani and were already established (studying online degrees).
