Brazilian Baseball and Softball Association (ABBS) shares the gospel using baseball with at-risk children of São José dos Campos, Brazil. Youth from these communities are at high risk of involvement with drugs, crime, and trafficking from a young age. Children from low-income areas lacking access to quality education and community infrastructure attend the weekly baseball skills training program. Through weekly Bible studies, ABBS teaches families how to apply God’s Word to their lives and provides kids the opportunity to form safe, Christ-centered friendships within this “baseball family.”
This summer, in partnership with their church, ABBS wanted to send 30 of their children to a baseball camp, a combination training camp and vacation Bible school. A church in Pennsylvania heard about this desire and decided to share it with the kids at their VBS program for prayer and fundraising. Each morning, the kids watched a short video introducing them to ABBS and the testimonies of several kids in their program. They were challenged to pray for ABBS each day and look for ways to earn some extra money for the kids in Brazil to go to their own VBS.
The kids were excited to help other children have the opportunity to spend a week at a VBS like theirs, and they came in each morning with stories about what they had done to earn money for the fundraiser jar, such as cleaning toilets, doing dishes, working in the yard, and even losing a tooth.
By God’s grace, the camp was funded, and many young people spent a week studying and memorizing the Scriptures and playing baseball together!
