About Fountain of Life Christian School

Fountain of Life Christian School (FLCS), located in an impoverished area of Juan Tomás, Dominican Republic, is a Christian school under the sponsorship of the local church. The school, with the aim of evangelizing and educating the poor of the village, serves over 550 children.

Teachers in this close-knit community are dedicated to excellence in education and create a safe environment for their students, integrating a Christian worldview and sharing the gospel in all their classes. The school provides impoverished students with the essentials to kick off the school year, including a uniform and backpack with school supplies.

Most of the students come from villages outside of Juan Tomás, and many do not come from believing families. In the past 30 years, through faithful classroom teaching, parent-teacher conferences, counseling, and other school events, the Lord has brought many children and families to faith in Christ.

The school’s desire and mission are to use the appeal of an excellent educational program to win many to Christ and see them plugged into local churches for fellowship and discipleship. The strength of the school’s reputation can be seen by the waiting list for admission and the respect that the Ministry of Education has for the school. Parents do have access to free government schools and governmental incentives to send their kids there (books, uniforms, transportation, newer facilities), yet the student body continues to expand. Parents say that they are attracted to the teachers’ love for their students as much as the school’s academic quality.

About the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, located in the Caribbean Sea between the islands of Cuba and Puerto Rico. Haiti occupies the other third of the island.

While education is compulsory for children ages 7-14, only around 60% of kids in the Dominican Republic graduate from high school. Finances play a significant role in determining a child’s ability to stay in school, as the costs for uniforms, schoolbooks, and supplies alone can overwhelm a family’s budget.

Liaison Notes

There is a serious need for this ministry in the community. FLCS has a strong sense of mission, and God has blessed the work of the teachers and church by bringing students and parents to Christ. The teachers at Fountain of Life are passionate about wanting to see children and their parents come to Christ. They have a love for Christ and his Word, a love for the children, and a love for the mission to reach and teach them.

Prayer Points

  1. FLCS rejoices in the recent baptism of nine of their high schoolers! Many of their testimonies alluded to how the Lord had used their teachers to point them to Christ.
  2. Please pray for the Lord to grow these young people in faith and love for Him and His Word and bring many more students to repentance and faith.
  3. Pray for the Lord to give the staff wisdom in interacting with students and opportunities to share the gospel and show the love of Christ to these young people.
  4. Pray for the Lord to work in the parents’ hearts and bring many to faith in Christ.
  5. Pray for the graduating seniors at FLCS. Pray for wisdom and direction for what to do after graduation.
  6. Pray for believers to grow in faith, love, and steadfastness, and pray for the Lord to bring many more to faith in Him.
