Orphan and Widow Care

About Mustard Seed Orphanage

Mustard Seed Orphanage (MSO) uniquely combines orphan and widow care as it provides food, housing, Christian education, discipleship, job training, and medical care for over 190 widows and orphans. Rather than living in isolation, widows are folded into the ministry to care for orphans at MSO. Their needs are met while giving them tangible work and ministry after the loss of their own families. Since widows understand loss, they are also able to empathize with children grieving the loss of parents and extended family. In this way, MSO is building a community centered upon Christ, incorporating both widows and children into the life of the church and the community.

MSO consists of three houses: Ebenezer, Hosanna, and Mustard Seed. The orphanage keeps livestock and grows most of the food to feed the children in their care, in addition to overseeing their education and medical care. Hosanna Bible College is an outreach of Mustard Seed providing solid theological training to those seeking to further their knowledge of God or considering serving as pastors, teachers, and missionaries to their local communities.

The Lord has brought refugees and community members to their local worship services, enabling MSO to be a light and blessing to the community at large.

About Myanmar

Myanmar is the largest country in Southeast Asia and shares borders with Bangladesh, India, China, Laos, Thailand, and the Indian Ocean. Its population is 57.5 million people, and its biggest city, Yangon, has 5.5 million residents. Myanmar’s main religion is Buddhism, and the population of evangelical Christians in the country is less than 5 percent.

The number of orphans in Myanmar continues to rise, with some children truly orphaned and others given up by parents desperate to keep their children alive amid deep poverty and the inability to provide even basic needs.

After a February 2021 coup, Myanmar was plunged into civil war. Since then, 2.6 million people have been displaced, thousands have been killed, and entire villages have been destroyed because of the conflict.

Liaison Notes

“At Mustard Seed, you can see and feel the difference that the gospel makes, not just the transformative power of the gospel when it comes to individual lives, but how it transforms an entire community. There is such a contrast; it is like stepping into another world to enter the gates. It is a completely different environment inside – peace, harmony, happiness, purpose, meaning, cleanliness – all these things are the by-products of the work of Christ in individuals’ lives.”

~Rev. Julian Bull
