Providing Love and Care for Orphans and Widows

Yangon, Myanmar is a very poor city. Forty percent of the population lives in extreme poverty. Proper sanitation does not exist here, and hazardous living conditions abound, leaving its citizens vulnerable to disease. Homes are not built well, and many families are left open to the elements. The typical home is a bamboo shack built on stilts due to flooding from the volatile river nearby. Most families subsist on only $30 a month, and food shortage is always a problem. Due to the intense poverty, many families cannot care for their children. A lot of these children end up in orphanages or on the streets.

One of the most impoverished groups in Yangon are the widows. Women do not have the opportunities that men do. Many widows are left without aid or any means to earn an income for themselves. But in this scenario of daily struggle and survival lies a bright promise, a hope, and a beautiful ray of God’s love for many—the Mustard Seed Orphanage.

Many of the children stay with Mustard Seed for years and grow up in their care. Many make their own individual and personal commitments to God and thank Him for all He has done for them.

As the children grow, the orphanage faces the challenge of providing for the next stage of their lives as they transition into adulthood. This entails working with others to find them suitable employment and providing them with pathways into the working world and also back into the local communities. Many children have definite talents and gifts from God; Mustard Seed strives to allow the children to pursue these through university studies.

Oakseed has been a partner of the Mustard Seed Orphanage since 2008 and has helped through faith-filled prayer and regular funding to provide for many orphans and widows. The need is great, and Oakseed is there to help them every step of the way.

Mustard Seed Orphanage seeks to help Yangon’s orphans and widows to live and succeed on a day-to-day basis. This ministry provides food, housing, a Christian education, medical care, and spiritual nourishment for hundreds of orphans and widows. Run by a board of volunteers, Mustard Seed Orphanage is a ministry of love and dedication to help those who have been left destitute in life.

“If you have faith as small as a mustard seed… nothing will be impossible for you.”
- Matthew 17:20

Mustard Seed Orphanage also works with Ebenezer House and Hosanna House; together they care for over 190 widows and orphans. They keep their own livestock and grow their own food, which is crucial to caring for all of those in their ministry.

“We see the Lord putting smiles on the faces of children who now find themselves with food to eat, clothes to wear, a roof over their heads, and belonging to a family—the family of God.”

The Mustard Seed ministry is growing as the Lord brings more and more children their way. This blessing also increases the challenge of raising the funds required to help them all. They do not have the option of failing to provide food for the children to eat every night. Volunteers say that the burden feels so heavy, but the Lord never fails to provide. This is a testament to His love, power, and mercy!
