April 17th, 2008 by Benjamin

The Essay Contest is now closed

The staff here in the Oakseed office would like to thank everyone who took the time to write and submit an essay to the 2008 International Essay Contest focusing on Compassion and children with disability. It was an amazing last 24 hours, every single time we checked the submissions the number kept rising at exponential rates (Over 500 essays submitted in the final 24 hours). Right now we’ve got several desk piled high with essays getting processed and ready to be distributed to the judges.

Many of you have been emailing questions about the judging process and what the next steps are in the contest. Hopefully the following information will help.

  1. April 17 – May 2 : The first round of judging takes place. Historically, about 10% of the essays make it out of the first round.
  2. May 2 – May 16 : Second round of judging.
  3. May 16 – May 30 : Final round of judging.
  4. May 31 : Winners will be notified by email or phone and the names of the winners (as well as their essays) will be posted on this site. (www.oakseed.org)

Thank you again, and stay tuned for some exciting news.

Upper Loft Meditation – Ephesians 1

April 15th, 2008 by Dr. Edward Bradley

“I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.” – Ephesians 1:18-19

Did you know that you have eyes in your heart?  The Apostle Paul prays that his fellow believers would see with their hearts.  In his day, this meant seeing with one’s whole being, heart, soul, and mind.  The idea here is that the Holy Spirit would turn on the light for you to see more clearly.  When you are in the dark you may see dimly, but when the light is turned on everything clear.

“The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.” – 1 Corinthians 2:14

Apart from the work of the Holy Spirit the eyes of the heart are blind.

“The constant desire of our lives should be that we might ‘grow in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord’.  The trouble with so many of us is that we have never awakened to this realization.  We seem to think that we have ‘arrived’, that we ‘know’.” [M. Lloyd-Jones]

How often do you have the attitude that there is nothing new for you to learn?  There are three key principles here;

  1. There will always be more for us to know and understand
  2. Seeing is progressive and what we understand builds on what we have understood.  Spiritual apperception is critical to growth, and
  3. It is only when we enter heaven that we will fully understand.

Lord, turn on the lights, so i may see you more clearly.

Direct Line to God

April 11th, 2008 by Benjamin

There are so many times when our ministry partners are working hard and focused on sharing who Jesus is with the poor around them that the simple words of a child can have profound meaning.

One of our ministry partners works with many AIDS patients and their families. Many of these AIDS patients who come to the AIDS hospice group bring their children who get an opportunity to play and be children in a loving, caring, fellowship atmosphere.

On a recent evening, one of these children made a desperate phone call to our ministry partner. This scared 6 year old girl was worried that her father was getting so sick that he probably wouldn’t live much longer. And then in a child-like innocence, she “asked for Jesus’ mobile number” so that she could tell Jesus first hand what was going on and get help from Jesus.

In a moment when this little girl must have been so scared, she only wanted to get Jesus’ mobile number so that she could have a direct line to God.

Palabras de Aliento – Romanos 15

April 11th, 2008 by Benjamin

Upper Loft Meditation – Romans 15

April 8th, 2008 by Dr. Edward Bradley

“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” – Romans 15:4

Hope is like a muscle, it must receive nourishment and be exercised, or it begins to wither away. It is not like a fire extinguisher mounted on a wall and available for emergencies.

How should we feed our hope? From the Scriptures, we receive the nutrients, the very basis for our hope. As Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, “For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.”

Just as we must eat to live, so we must feed our hope through regular reading of the Scriptures. No one would think of eating only a Sunday morning brunch each week. With this type of habit it is no wonder people struggle clinging to their hope.

How should we exercise our hope? One ongoing exercise is the Trust Factor. How does this work? Consider how you will walk in hope today. How is your walk affected by three central truths:

  1. God’s mercy is new everyday.
  2. God’s grace is sufficient for all your needs.
  3. God’s love for you is unfailing.

The words used in this passage convey the idea that the recipients of this letter are going through hard times. This is when hope is so important. Wrapped in the arms of Jesus you have confidence that God is faithful.

Palabras de Aliento – 1 Pedro 1

April 4th, 2008 by Benjamin

April First brings out some interesting stories

April 1st, 2008 by Benjamin

It seems that every April 1st, web developers put on their creative hats and come up with very funny stories. Even though I know this is April 1st (April Fools Day), I’m constantly questioning everything I read because I know this is a day where things aren’t always what they seem. And even with my “fools” radar going, I’m always drawn into some jokes until its too late to realize that its just a joke.

This TREEHOUSE section on Oakseed Ministries will be an ongoing Story-telling area where you can read and follow along with the stories of many of the Oakseed Ministry partners. Sometimes we will share a story directly from the mouths of our partners. Sometimes we will modify the names of the participants to provide protection. But most of the time, we hope to bring you closer to our ministry partners by allowing you to share in their joys and sufferings.

But for this first TREEHOUSE story, I wanted to share some of the fun “April Fools Jokes” I found on the internet this morning.

  • Gmail Time – Google is famous for its many pranks and jokes during April 1st. This one was a hidden little feature in gmail that allows email senders to send emails in the future and also send emails in the past.
  • The Crystal Ball – Google Australia also got into the fun by providing a search tool that lets users see into the future.
  • Pizza Hut has now discovered wonderful Pasta and has thus renamed their company to Pasta Hut.

But my all time favorite of this year’s creative April Fools Jokes was played by the BBC. They have released a new documentary trailer focused on Penguins. I just love flying penguins! Enjoy…

Do you have any other enjoyable April Fools stories? Please share below…

Upper Loft Meditation- 1 Peter 1

April 1st, 2008 by Dr. Edward Bradley

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead…” – 1 Peter 1:3

Through the resurrection of Jesus, God has given to those who believe in His son, a living hope.

It is very important to understand that this is a hope, not as the world defines hope, but as it is defined in the Bible. Hope is defined by the world as wishful thinking. It is what you want to have happen.

The Bible defines hope as something in the future you are certain will come to pass. “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1

You can see the huge difference between the two different view points.

C.S. Lewis writes that hope is not “a form of escapism or wishful thinking, but one of the things a Christian is meant to do. If you read history you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were just those who thought most of the next. The apostles themselves, who set on foot the conversion of the Roman Empire, the great men who built up the Middle Ages, the English Evangelicals who abolished the Salve Trade, all left their mark on Earth, precisely because their minds were occupied with Heaven. It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this. Aim at Heaven and you will get earth ‘thrown in’; aim at earth and you will get neither.”

Hope is not to be set on a shelf with all your other reference books. It is to be set ever before you like a fresh bouquet of flowers.
